New summer fellowship launches for science teachers, research mentors

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power launched a new summer research fellowship for middle and high school science teachers in Alaska.

The Murdock Partners in Science @ University of Alaska program pairs teacher partners with UA research mentors for two consecutive summers of paid research.

The program supports educators interested in energy, climate, engineering and Alaska-based research and is part of a larger network of universities in the program funded by the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. 

The inaugural 2026-2027 teacher partners have begun research projects in Anchorage, Unalaska and Newhalen.

  • Melissa Kagle, Unalaska City High School, Unalaska
    Project: The impact of volcanism on geothermal development
  • Craig Kasemodel, Romig Middle School, Anchorage
    Project: Wildfires and critical infrastructure
  • Sydney Boone Robertaccio, Newhalen School, Newhalen
    Project: Fungal biotechnology for sustainable Alaskan fisheries
