UAF-Supported Tools for Teaching

The Canvas LMS is the primary platform for teaching using technology at UAF. However, there are many tools available to supplement the capabilities of Canvas, which can be used to have different types of student interactions, add multimedia content, or provide additional tools for assessment and grading. The tools listed below are ones supported by UAF CTL and NTS for use by instructors. Many of them are “integrations” - meaning that they can be used within Canvas. We highly recommend that you use UAF-supported tools for teaching; it maintains continuity for your students, allowing them to use familiar tools across multiple classes, and ensures CTL and NTS can support your endeavors.

Google Workspace for Education

Google Workspace for Education is a suite of Google tools that can be used for file management, creation, and collaboration. The workspace includes familiar tools like Gmail and Google Drive, but also includes newer Google products. Anyone with an @alaska.edu email address can log in (via UA single sign-on) and use these tools on the @alaska.edu domain.

H5P

that enable people to create new ways of displaying and interacting with online content. H5P is integrated with Canvas and can be used for graded assignments.

Kaltura

Similar to a UAF-only YouTube, it hosts videos and audio files for streaming playback. Kaltura is integrated with Canvas and can be found in the text editing box of the Rich Content Editor for any Page, Assignment, or Discussion. Kaltura is also connected to Zoom, meaning that recorded Zoom meetings are archived there. Kaltura provides high-quality automated captions for videos, making them more accessible.

How can I use Kaltura in my teaching?

Use the Kaltura ExpressCapture tool to record quick videos in your browser or the Kaltura Capture software to record screencasts
Create Discussion or presentation assignments that require students to submit video responses using Kaltura
Import YouTube videos through Kaltura as instructional material

Provide Zoom recordings to students who may have missed class through Kaltura

Hypothes.is

is a collaborative online annotation tool that enables peers to read, annotate and comment on online content. Hypothes.is has also been integrated into Canvas LMS for use in course shells.

Noodle Factory

Noodle Factory is an AI tool specifically designed for UAF instructors to enhance course delivery and student engagement. Noodle Factory allows instructors to create custom AI clients that exist only within the course using a database of material created by the instructor.

WeVideo

is a web-based video editor available for all individuals with an @alaska.edu email address. Create video projects that can be personally managed, collaboratively edited, or that have shared editing privileges. Combine media from multiple video sources, images, text and add transitions into a single video project.

How can I use WeVideo in my class?
