Online Alaska master gardener course open for registration

Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom. Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the 四虎影院 Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course.
2025 growing season one of the longest in 四虎影院 history

The 2025 四虎影院 growing season officially ended on Sept. 24, according to measurements taken at the 四虎影院 Experiment Farm on the 四虎影院 Troth Yeddha' Campus. The freeze on Sept. 24 ended a 129-day growing season, defined as the number of days between freezing temperatures, said Rick Thoman, a climate specialist with the UAF Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedness.
Researcher to discuss benefits of using kelp as fertilizer

Kelp shows great promise for improving soil health and crop production in Alaska. In a free webinar, Erin Oliver, a postdoctoral researcher with Washington State University, will discuss the lab and field studies conducted at the Matanuska Experiment Farm to investigate the effects of kelp on soil health and crop production.

The Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension is home to UAF's land-grant mission including the UAF Agriculture and Forestry Station as well as Cooperative Extension. The Morrill Act of 1862 established land-grant colleges and the federal Hatch Act of 1887 authorized agricultural experiment stations in the U.S. and its territories to provide science-based research information to farmers. There are agricultural experiment stations in each of the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and all but one are part of the land-grant college system. UAF's Extension is part of the largest informal education system in the world, connecting Extension programs at land-grant colleges and universities in every U.S. territory and state. Today, the is the USDA division that manages federal funding of the nation鈥檚 experiment stations and the extension service.
