UAF webinar examines climate change impacts on salmon

A warming climate is both harming and helping salmon in northern regions, according to a 四虎影院 fisheries researcher. Peter Westley, principal investigator of the Salmonid Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation Lab, will discuss the variable role of warming on Alaska鈥檚 salmon in a free statewide webinar hosted by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service.
Youths can learn barbecue basics at 4-H Grill Master Camp

Youths from fourth to 12th grade can learn about fire safety, food safety, starting a charcoal grill, seasoning meats and grilling different meats at the 4-H Grill Master Camp. Youths do not need to be members of 4-H to attend.

In a hands-on workshop led by the Alaska Harvest Collaborative, learn how to turn kitchen scraps and garden waste into rich, nutrient-packed soil that will help your garden thrive. Garden manager Mallory Smith will teach the essentials of composting -- from the basics of balancing green and brown materials to creating and mixing the perfect compost pile.

The Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension is home to UAF's land-grant mission including the UAF Agriculture and Forestry Station as well as Cooperative Extension. The Morrill Act of 1862 established land-grant colleges and the federal Hatch Act of 1887 authorized agricultural experiment stations in the U.S. and its territories to provide science-based research information to farmers. There are agricultural experiment stations in each of the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and all but one are part of the land-grant college system. UAF's Extension is part of the largest informal education system in the world, connecting Extension programs at land-grant colleges and universities in every U.S. territory and state. Today, the is the USDA division that manages federal funding of the nation鈥檚 experiment stations and the extension service.
