Outstanding Student of the Year
Every year the College of Liberal Arts asks each department to select their outstanding student(s) for that year- students who possess the passion and creativity for new discoveries and scholarship, students who demonstrate independence of thought and action in the pursuit of knowledge, and students who exemplify excellence.
The Department of Science and Environmental Journalism has chosen the following as students who embodies these qualities and so much more. Thank you for all your hard work and contributions to your department. You make a difference at UAF.
Congratulations to our 2026 Outstanding Student of the Year!

"My experience within the Department of Science and Environmental Journalism has been one of immense growth, as well as great opportunities... There are so many opportunities for real-world experiences. Students are always encouraged to submit stories to newspapers like the Daily News-Miner, the UAF Sun Star, and even sometimes larger Alaska publications. Through the program, I was also fortunate to be able to work for Alaska's largest paper, the Anchorage Daily News... This internship taught me a number of real-life reporting skills, which I was then able to translate into my reporting this past year in classes. Just strengthening skills as a whole is the department's goal, and also growing the future journalists of Alaska."
