Friday Focus: Transitioning UAF's R1 initiatives from research to operations

Just over two years ago Chancellor White asked me to chair UAF's R1 Steering Committee and lead UAF's pursuit of R1 status. While a daunting task, I accepted this role as I knew from experience that working on a strategic initiative with our fearless and forward-looking Chancellor would allow me to actively contribute to positive change at UAF. From a broad perspective, achieving R1 status will give UAF the local, state, and global recognition for being the research powerhouse many of us know UAF to be. This is a respectable goal. Within UAF many of us have an additional take on this goal. We see this as an opportunity to reevaluate the status quo and reinvent ourselves into the university we want to be: A high-caliber university where students, staff, faculty, and administrators work together to deliver exceptional education and conduct impactful research that serves Alaska. This is a goal we can all support.

Community-Engaged Fellows begin summer work

A group of undergraduate students is spending this summer working in coastal communities through the Alaska Sea Grant Community-Engaged Fellowship. Each fellow receives mentorship from a host organization or an Alaska Sea Grant faculty member and is part of a national cohort of 85 Fellows working with 23 Sea Grant programs across the country.

The Institute of Northern Engineering reinforced UAF’s research depth, while the College of Engineering and Mines highlighted its new Energy Resource Engineering program, training students to lead across Alaska’s evolving energy landscape.

Friday Focus: Leading in a time of change

While new to the role, I am proud to have had a 10+ year career serving the Nanook Nation in a variety of capacities, including as a faculty and vice chancellor. UAF is a special place, and I think all who have had the opportunity to study or work for one of our six campuses can attest to that point.

Friday Focus: A new chapter for old UPark

A conversation about the importance of childcare for working parents is not a new one for UAF, and has deep roots in our community. Shortly after I stepped into this position in 2019, one of the first groups to reach out to share ideas was the UAF Faculty Senate Committee on the Status of Women. This committee is composed of faculty and staff representatives, and has been advocating for family-friendly practices for a number of years, such as: travel reimbursements related to childcare needs, paid parental leave, improvements to types of leave, and expanded childcare services on the Troth Yeddha' campus where there is more demand for available spots than can support our population. These types of improvements, if made, would contribute to being a more competitive employer, helping to recruit new employees and improve retention for existing employees.

Shubin receives new counselor award

At its annual conference in May, the Western Association for College Admission Counseling awarded Casey Shubin its 2025 Murdoch-Finks New Admission Counselor Award. Casey has been UAF's Regional Admissions Counselor based in Los Angeles since last August.

Anna Gagne-Hawes receives admissions excellence award
June 09, 2025
The 2025 Excellence in Admissions Award, given by the Pacific Northwest Association for Admission Counseling at its annual conference in May, went to UAF's Anna Gagne-Hawes. Anna was a part of UAF's Admissions Office for a decade, eventually serving as director of Admissions before shifting to a new role this month as the Academic Advising Center's special projects manager and first-year advising specialist.

And now, with the recent retirement of Provost Anupma Prakash and the upcoming retirement of Chancellor Dan White, we find ourselves once again in a moment of transition.
